Fruits and Produce Top List of Most Popular Organic Foods, According to Study by Decision Analyst
U.S. sales of certified organic products reached $69.7 billion dollars in 2023, according to the Organic Trade Association1. The USDA defines organic foods as those produced without synthetic chemicals or genetically modified components.
Asked to list the food categories in which only organic brands or varieties are purchased, 23% of study participants said they buy only organic fruits, 22% said that they buy only organic produce, and 19% said they only buy organic eggs, according to a nationwide study by Decision Analyst, a leading marketing research and analytics firm. Statistics for these and other food categories are shown below.
Those who most often shop for organic foods at grocery stores are consumers under age 35 and those who earn over $200,000, according to the Decision Analyst study. Least likely to buy organic foods are consumers over the age of 55.
“Organic foods tend to have a healthy halo, but not everyone strives to eat healthy. We should all aim to eat healthier foods when we're able to do so, even though they generally come at higher costs,” explained Tom Allen, Senior Vice President at Decision Analyst. “Not everyone can afford to eat organic foods all the time,” Allen added.
Methodology
The U.S. Organic Food Trends study was conducted February 24 through March 27, 2024. It drew on a sample of 7,331 U.S. adults.
