Data or Web Scraping
Data Scraping or Web Scraping
The Internet is littered with personal websites and blogs and other sites where
millions of people post information about themselves, their interests and hobbies,
their hopes and dreams, etc. Data scraping (or web scraping, or screen scraping,
etc.) is a legitimate technique to go out and search all of these accessible
websites and retrieve relevant information. Decision Analyst uses special software
to “scrape” these websites for relevant data. These software systems
scan and record text and pictures across hundreds of different target websites
and blogs. This usually produces so much text that NLP (Natural Language Processing)
must be used to help identify, distill, and analyze the resulting content. Ascribe®
computer-assisted coding software is used in the final stages to help analyze
the data. Like online communities, data scraping is simply another qualitative
technique, and should be thought of as exploratory in nature.
