Nearly Half Of Working American Adults Are Worried About Layoffs,
According To A Survey By Decision Analyst

Arlington, Texas (September 25, 2008)— Nearly half of working American adults are worried about layoffs at their places of employment, according to a recent study by Decision Analyst, a leading marketing research and marketing consulting firm.

In its ongoing U.S. Economic Index survey, Decision Analyst asked a representative sample of 1,441 employed U.S. adults during August 2008 whether they were “very worried,” “somewhat worried,” or “not worried” about layoffs or staff reductions where they work. Among all respondents, 9.5% said they were very worried and 34.6% said they were somewhat worried.

As shown in the table below, there is an 11 percentage point jump from August 2007 to August 2008 in the percentage of U.S. workers who were worried about losing their jobs.

In August 2008, women were more worried about losing their jobs, compared to men.

Layoff fears tended to be highest in the New England, Middle Atlantic, and East North Central census divisions (the northeast quadrant of the U.S.) and in the Mountain and Pacific census divisions. On the other hand, three census divisions appeared to be doing okay. Layoff fears were lowest in the West North Central, West South Central, and East South Central census divisions (i.e., the Midwest and Southern parts of the U.S.).

“Our data indicate that the Midwest and the South are probably still on an economic uptrend, although growing slowly, while the other regions of the U.S. are definitely in a recessionary downtrend,” said Jerry W. Thomas, president/CEO of Decision Analyst. “The recession will quickly spread to the whole U.S. if credit contraction cannot be stopped.”

Methodology

Decision Analyst’s U.S. Economic Index tracking study is conducted monthly among a balanced, representative sample of U.S. adults. Respondents are surveyed about buying habits, personal finances, and confidence in the economy. Information here is from August 2008. The survey’s margin of error is approximately 3 percent, plus or minus, at a 95% confidence level.
