Decision Analyst’s Economic Index Gains Speed In November

Arlington, Texas—For a second straight month the Decision Analyst Economic Index has increased, jumping from 105 in October to 109 in November.

“Even with the recent layoffs announced by General Motors, consumer optimism has increased. This is largely due to the decline in gas prices,” said Jerry W. Thomas, President and CEO of Decision Analyst, a marketing research and marketing consulting firm. “As we head into the winter, the economic outlook will continue to depend on energy prices and the interest-rate trend.”

The increases in the November indicators were due to consumer confidence in “lower inflation” (up 15 points), “stocks” (up 12 points) and “employment status” (up 11 points). The only decreases were minor: “corporate hiring” and “business activities” were down one point each.

Methodology

The Decision Analyst Economic Index is based on a monthly Internet survey of several thousand households balanced by gender, age, and geography. The survey is typically conducted between the 20th and 27th of each month. However due to the Thanksgiving holiday the data was collected between November 16th and 23rd. The Index is calculated from nine different economic measurements, using a sophisticated econometric model. The result is a snapshot of current U.S. economic activity, as seen through the eyes of representative consumers. Decision Analyst also conducts concurrent economic surveys in Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Mexico, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, and India. Whenever the Decision Analyst Economic Index is greater than 110, it tends to signal an expanding economy. An index value of 100 to 110 suggests a stagnant economy, and below 100 generally indicates economic contraction. These guidelines vary by country, however.
