Economic Index Continues to Weaken In February
ARLINGTON, Texas The U.S. economy limped along in a weakened state during
February, according to the trend of Decision Analysts National Economic
Index. This index is based on a national probability survey conducted during
the last 10 days of each month.
The Decision Analyst monthly Economic Index for the U.S. peaked in the summer of
2000, declined to a slightly lower level in the fall, and then plunged in
January and February, as shown below.
Whenever the Decision Analyst Economic Index is greater than 105, it signals an
expanding economy. An index in the 95-to-105 range suggests a stagnant economy,
and an index below 95 generally indicates economic contraction or recession.
"The economy does not appear to actually be in a recession as of yet, but
the risk of a recession continues to grow," according to Jerry W. Thomas,
President/CEO of Decision Analyst.
"Layoffs appear to underlie the drop in the Economic Index," Thomas
stated, "as well as the price shocks associated with rising energy prices.
News about planned layoffs by U.S. corporations has also contributed to falling
consumer spirits."
The Decision Analyst Economic Index is based on an Internet survey of more than
5,000 households balanced by gender, age and geography. The survey is premised
on the assumption that a representative sample of U.S. adults reporting on
business activity where they work, as well as personal financial data and
trends, provides a snapshot of current U.S. economic activity. The survey is
conducted over the Internet during the last ten days of each month. The
Economic Index is calculated from nine different economic measurements, using a
sophisticated econometric model.
