U.S. Economy Riding High

Arlington, Texas – The Decision Analyst Economic Index for April indicates that the U.S. economy continues rapid expansion. The booming economy shows little evidence of any negative factors that might stall economic growth. The Economic Index for the United States stood at 126 at the end of April, slightly above the average level for all of 1999.

"The strength of the U.S. economy in April is consistent with the sustained growth observed over the past 18 months," said Jerry W. Thomas, President/CEO of Decision Analyst, Inc. "Our Economic Index continues to show a booming U.S. economy."

Whenever the Decision Analyst Economic Index is greater than 105, it signals an expanding economy. An index in the 95 to 105 range suggests a stagnant economy, and an index below 95 generally indicates economic contraction or recession.

Economic strength was evident in all geographic regions of the U.S. in April. The South Atlantic region was the strongest overall, while West North Central and the Mid Atlantic regions were comparatively weaker, as shown on the attached map.

The Canadian economy continues to parallel the U.S. economy, but at a significantly lower level. The Decision Analyst Economic Index for Canada stood at 116 at the close of April, compared to 126 for the U.S.

The Decision Analyst Economic Index is based on an Internet survey of more than 5,000 households balanced by gender, age and geography. The survey is premised on the assumption that a representative sample of U.S. and Canadian adults reporting on business activity where they work, as well as personal financial data and trends, provides a snapshot of current U.S. and Canadian economic activity. The survey is conducted during the last ten days of each month over the Internet. The Economic Index is calculated from nine different economic measurements, using a sophisticated econometric model.
