Use Of Vitamin E Increasing, Survey Shows
Arlington, Texas Nearly one-third of American adults now are taking
Vitamin E as a dietary supplement, according to a recent nationwide survey by
Decision Analyst, Inc., a leading national marketing research firm.
In its fall 1997 survey of 8,451 households, Decision Analyst found 31.4% of
adults were taking Vitamin E as a supplementa 7% increase since the last
survey 15 months ago.
The increase is particularly strong among women, with 25.4% of female
respondents in the most recent survey saying they were taking the vitamin,
compared to 19.2% in the earlier survey. In the most recent study, 16.9% of men
were taking the vitamin, compared to 12.3% in the earlier survey.
"Vitamin E continues to be one of the most popular dietary
supplements," said Jerry W. Thomas, president and chief executive officer
of Decision Analyst. "In fact, our research shows Vitamin E has overtaken
calcium to become the second most popular single-vitamin supplement behind
Vitamin C."
Though most popular with adults 55 and over (44.3% of those take Vitamin E),
Vitamin E also is widely used by adults 45 to 54 (35.9%). The vitamin is least
popular among those 34 and younger, the survey shows.
By census region, Vitamin E is most popular among adults in the West (34.9% of
those using the vitamin) and least popular among Midwestern adults (28.9%).
Its national survey of Vitamin E has a margin of error of plus or minus one
percent.
