Over Twenty Percent Of U.S. Households Now Online
Arlington, Texas The number of households subscribing to some type of
online computer service is growing rapidly. In a June 1997 national survey of
6,490 U.S. households, Decision Analyst, Inc. found that 23% of households
currently subscribe to online computer services at home. Thats over 21
million households currently online. The percentage of households subscribing
to online services has nearly doubled in a little less than two years.
"The driving force behind the growing number of households with online
computer service is the Internet," said Jerry W. Thomas, President/CEO of
Decision Analyst, Inc. "The proliferation of new Internet services and new
Internet sites is phenomenal. The Internet is a tidal wave that promises to
change the way business is done in many industries. Its a new
entertainment medium, a new communication medium, and a new marketing and
advertising medium."
Households using online computer services tend to be better educated and higher
in income than the average household. See the attached graphs for more detail
on the demographic makeup of online subscribers.
Its survey of online computer use in the home has a margin error of plus or
minus one percent.
